 Hackers have infiltrated Skynet and seen secret plans by Motorola to launch the Terminator series of Android handsets in early 2011. The first is codenamed T2, and will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread on hardware described as "astonishing" by todays puny human standards. These beasts have two brains - the chipset is based on the Nvidia dual-core Tegra 2. Actually, pretty much every detail regarding these handsets is unofficial since Motorola has clamped down on anyone involved with its development by forcing them to consent to silence with an NDA. There's clearly also the need to prevent cannibalisation, where users considering buying current handsets delay their purchase once they hear of a new, better model just round the corner.
There are so many unknowns here its hard to know where to start. Virtually nothing about Android 3.0 has been made public; it is thought there is to be a radical UI makeover aimed at dissuading the carriers from adding their own skins, which is the main reason for the delays in rolling out new Android versions to them even though Google make the releases public. It is also thought to target tablets, in fact LG recently pulled back their current plans to launch one based on Android 2.2 citing the support 3.0 offers as giving "a better user experience".
Gingerbread is aimed at high-end hardware - you'll not see this running on your G1 - and there is talk of a minimum hardware spec along the lines of a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 3.5-inch screens that support 1,280x760 pixels.
Who knows? This could even be a 4G LTE model. In any event, when we find out more, we'll be back.
