Great news for G1 owners (in the US at least) - true to their word, the updates just keep on coming from Google. This time it's the hugely anticipated Maps Navigation app, the one originally announced for Android 2.0 to ... Android 1.6! This is the same app which caused such upset when first announced and had more than a few G1 owners worrying their trusty first generation handset was already consigned to the scrap heap.
The new version will leave some Android users hoping for an update, however, as some are still stick with Android 1.5. This includes the HTC Hero, Droid Eris, Samsung moment and the Samsung Behold. Hopefully an OTA update will remedy this because the app itself is a regular download from the Android Market.
The fusion of Google Maps with GPS turn-by-turn navigation had been rumoured for a while, and is only available to the US currently. It also carries the famous Google "beta" label ;-) There are some differences between the Android 1.6 and Android 2.0 versions - you don't get the ultra-cool spoken voice commands, for example.
This service really goes a little further than regular "sat nav" systems and gives a hint of what Google is ultimately aiming for. On the demo video, the user knows there are a few museums in town but can't remember which one has the King Tut exhibit - but Google does. So all he says is "take me to the museum with the King Tut exhibit" and away you go. See what they did there?
Awesome - unless you are already in the sat nav business.
